After numerous appearances on compilations and the 1995 debut album ‘Rest in Peace’, Dariusch Dalili's BIONIC, founded already 1991, is finally to release another album. 'Close To Nature' is heavily influenced by old-school EBM, even to the point of retro, but it also shows the imprint of electronic pop music, resulting in a very appealing mix. The album is opened with 'It Doesn't Matter', a catchy piece with desolated lyrics, lazily throbbing beat and alluring bass line. Next come two more upbeat tracks, 'Anything' and 'Inside', both of which have dance floor potential. They are followed by calmer, airy 'What Would You…?' and instrumental 'Cold Eyes', which exhibits a more trancy approach.
The following tracks cavalcade Dalili's skills in creating catching melodies and diverse sounds: Melodic 'Give Me Shelter' bows the old synth-pop masters and sanguine 'Somewhere' is followed by solemn 'Strive for Uniting'. The heat of 'It's No Par' - a track more aggressive than its predecessors - is cooled off by another instrumental, 'I Want to Save You'. The album finishes with remixes of 'Inside' and 'It Doesn't Matter' by ACCESSORY and MINUSHEART. The biggest weakness of the album is nondescript vocals and predictability of the tracks - they do not irritate but are not always able to captivate, either, making the album too easy to bypass. It is a shame, though: Dalili clearly has the skill of creating pleasing, catchy melodies, but the album would have benefited of slightly more inventive takes on the old EBM themes.
