Album Review

With ‘Popkiller’, the Frankfurt-based electronic producer once has released an album, sending euphorical shockwaves through the club landscape, despite complains about the lack of content in the lyrics. That was in 2004! In 2010, ANTHONY ROTHER continues where he left off at the time and releases ‘Popkiller 2’ on 28th May 2010. The album is opened by ‘Night’, an introduction of field recordings and analogue melodies with a neat beat kicking in soon. ‘Disco Light’ then marks the album’s proper beginning, kicking off with a rough disco dance beat. Being quite a monotonous effort at first, the song however develops a few nice melodies. ‘Cinema’, just as most of the other tunes on this record, bases on a more or less variable dancing rhythm but here Rother adds experimentalism to the mixture, plays with the sounds, alienates them.

‘Big Boys’ could be such a good track if it weren’t for these insignificant lyrics that in my opinion are out of place here and destroy the good flow. Others will have different opinions about that matter, but for me the song would be way better without them. ‘Skyline’ actually is one of my favourites since it has this spherical appeal, evokes the feeling of drifting through worlds and that’s just something I really dig. We’re closing up with ‘Gates’, another dance floor filler, but with kind of an urgent beat; at least more than on other tracks. There’s light and dark on ‘Popkiller 2’. Upsides for instance are the ample use of well-constructed melodies, or the superb production; downsides (for me) the lyrics which most of the time simply disturb. Better leave it at completely instrumental tracks next time. ANTHONY ROTHER fans will get this record anyway I guess; others might want to have one or two listens first.
