“There’s something going on within the German music scene. The good stuff is consumed 90% aurally these days” That is, actually, how a promo text introducing German band DIE DROGEN (The Drugs) founded in 2008 starts, bringing out their album ‘Jetzt im Handel’ (In Stores Now) on 6th August, following the single ‘Süchtig Nach Dir’ (Addicted To You) from 16th July. So it seems, DIE DROGEN have been catching the sign of the times and produced some aurally consumable stuff to spread under a craving audience - and this is how it sounds like:
The album finds its beginning with the melancholically numbing chords, introducing ‘Ana (Ist Die Beste)’ before it’s doing a 180° turn, pumping forward becoming an aural rush of adrenaline therewith. Following ‘Süchtig Nach Dir’ doesn’t even bother about such deceptive techniques and lets his inner rocker come out to play right away. Having such a catchy chorus up its sleeves it must be a killer track on the band’s live shows, which is just a guess of course, but there’s a clear indication here. ‘Guten Tag’ melds softer indie tonalities, set on top of a straight-forward rhythm, with melancholic and at times a little freaky moods. With the following ‘Schalalalala’, the guys have put admiration for a particular person into music.
Admiration from afar, since the person sung about doesn’t even seem to know her secret fan. Could be an ironic song about a stalker as well! ‘Irgendwann, Vielleicht’ strikes mellower tones, incorporates longing, carried on acoustic threads. Closing ‘Ohne Dich’ treats similar waters, only that the moods have more density, yet are porous enough to let the candid lyrical content slip through and shine. ‘Jetzt im Handel’, an album to keep in mind! Not that it’s so extraordinary to re-invent the wheel, but it’s got that extra something that sets it apart from the mass. Just give it a try.
