Album review

Yasmine “Yaz” Uhlin, formerly from the Swedish Synth-Pop band ASHBURY HEIGHTS, release her debut album ‘Chimaera At Heart’ with her friends Johan Andersson and Elle. JAVELYNN is a very efficient mixture of electro-pop, electro-clash and guitar-wave music. There’s a little flavour of 80s music on top, which injects this electro-clash spirit.

From the beginning with the opener ‘Wannabe’ it seems clear that Yaz and her friends are a force to be reckoned. Strong pop beats combined with clear vocals and a retro arcade sound create a superb modern pop song. ‘Die Young’ shows solid fundamental pop-song experience with some real fine bass segments, a speeded up sound environment and almost clear voice from Yaz. Uncomplicated lyrics bolstered with a chunky bass backbone contrary to the bubbly synth generate a nice vibe in ‘Morphine’. The following track ‘Infinity’ shows again a good piece of work and with its hard bass lines and driving guitars this song is absolutely suitable for the dance floor. ‘La Fin Absolute Du Monde’ shows the real composition skills of JAVELYNN a terrific heavy bass line with brilliant and recognizable voice from Yaz ensures that you could listen this track several times.

The heavy, fast synth pop loaded ‘Oh Dear’ keeps you hooked from the opening beat to the closing guitar lick. Catchy beats and challenging lyrics surprise you during this song and keeps you wanting more when the track ‘This Song Is Not About You’ ends. ‘Skip A Heartbeat’ trembles with emotion a nice loveable voice from Yaz giving it plenty of broody charm. The following Track ‘Beat You’ already appeared on the ‘Taste the Machines/ The Pop Tunes’ promo and like the last track ‘Crisis’ could also convince to the end.

‘Cimaera At Heart’ is a nice album full of energy a memorable voice, catchy tunes combined with minimal beats and powerful electronic sound. Yaz gather a good mixture of girl power, pop, disco and nearly punk which rush along also showing some fragile sides. The sound is based on a strong production characterized by a good balance of electronics and guitar. The electronic side from this album is also well-crafted and original in sounds. However I could not avoid comparing tracks like ‘Wannabe’ with some hits from LADY GAGA. I’m maybe missing one absolute hit, the kind of song that you directly keep in mind and start to play again and again. ‘Chimaera At Heart’ is a fresh and creative album which satisfy most of the time and for Synth-Pop fans absolutely worth listening.
