Album Review
GEHENNA is a Norwegian Black Metal band, founded in 1993. They released seven studio albums thus far, as well as several EP and compilation appearances. Throughout the time, they experienced with Death Metal influences and included Symphonic and Keyboard-driven elements into their music. ‘Unravel’, their most recent effort, has been released in 2013, eight years after the predecessor ‘WW’. With this album, GEHENNA somewhat return to pure Black Metal of their early years - at times with a much slower and at times doom-influenced approach, as the opener ‘The Decision’ makes clear. The title track ‘Unravel’ shows a lot of variation between faster, almost shredding parts, and slow pace parts. This is underlined by a very raw and reduced production, which does not allow much room for details and brilliance.
Although a crystal-clear mixing would not fit to GEHENNA completely, a little more richness of detail and variation would have been nice. ‘Nine Circles Of Torture’ is one of the few songs that sticks out, since it has a certain Black ‘n’ Roll mood and an interesting vibe to it. Nevertheless, ‘Unravel’ is rather unspectacular and does neither offer surprises or compromises of any sort - for the most part, the songs just flow by and do not leave a lasting impression on the reader. This does not mean that the quality of the songs is bad, it is just not innovative. Although this might be exactly what elitist Black Metal strives for, a little more variation as well as experiments in song writing and instrumentation are what ‘Unravel’ lack.
