EP Review
I must confess I've never heard of KITE before. It's an act based in Sweden and they voluntarily stick to release EP's only. As the title indicates... we have the fifth one here... If you're looking for original synth sound, mixture of electronic and organic beats, very well worked melodies and production... this is definitely for you! There's not a lot of band I could compare KITE with, which is a pretty good thing. I may have a think of M83 and ZOLA JESUS from time to time.
The first song, ‘Wishful Summer Night’, is one of those M83 / ZOLA JESUS, with an almost Eastern Europe world music touch, a very strong bass line and special synth pads. ‘Dance Again’ starts with a heavy sounding mid temp beat, big arpeggiator and very analogue synth. Vocal line is almost New Wave / Heroic Music alike. Once again, production is massive and the band develops a real original universe. At this point, you're in or out! The appropriately entitled third track ‘The Rhythm’ is more uplifting and takes you progressively to the Dance floor right away. ‘I Can't Stand’ is driven by a strong bass line reminding of the ‘Never Let Me Down Again( Aggro Mix)’ type of... the comparison with DEPECHE MODE stops here, make no mistake.
Overall, the voice is very particular and far away from the common vocal tones. There's no mixed feelings about it. You like it or not. Personally I do like it, but I must confess that ‘If You Want’ with Nicklast alsmoust like a female vocalist is a nice breathing space and changes a bit. Once again, big special music and could have been a pure M83 track. It is really amazing what a huge vocal spectrum Nicklas has to offer! There's a big frustration in having only 5 tracks and the perspective of having a full album doesn't seem to be in the band's plans. I'm very curious now and surely jump on the previous EP's rather sooner than later.
