Schiller

On Monday, 19th May we visited SCHILLER at his current tour in Münster. The concert was announced with Dolby surround sound and I was very nosy for this thing. SCHILLER is the main project of Christopher von Deylen, a German musician. Von Deylen doesn't provide vocals for any of his music, instead choosing to collaborate with singers from within and outside of Germany, for example Enya, Sarah Brightman, Peter Heppner, miLù, Tarja Turunen, Alexander Veljanov or Mike Oldfield. The name of the band is taken from one of von Deylen's heroes, famed German poet Friedrich Schiller. The current album is called ‘Sehnsucht’ and was released in April 2008. At this concert, SCHILLER was supported by a live band, introduced by him as the best band of the world, and three female singers who sang several songs. http://www.myspace.com/schillermusic

Music & Performance
Just in time at 8 o'clock the lights went down and we could hear the first sounds from the PA, the stage at this time still was hidden behind a curtain, but we could see that SCHILLER and his band entered the stage behind the curtain. After this short intro from tape the curtain dropped by a big bang and the show began. Christopher von Deylen, who dominated the centre of the stage behind this synths and keyboards, was girdled by five musicians who played their instruments very virtuosic. In front on the left side, Mickey Meinert played alternating six different guitars, on the right side Tissy Thiers played the bass and Christian Kretschmar played an additional keyboard, later he change his instrument for one song and played a Cello during ‘Denn wer liebt’. The background of the stage was dominated by two drum sets (one analogue and the other electronic) which were played by Ralf Gustke and Cliff Hewitt.

The setlist consists of instrumental songs and some songs with vocals which were performed by three different beautiful female singers; at the third song Jette von Roth entered the stage and sang the following two songs, later Kim Sanders and Jaël sang several songs as well. Especially Kim animated the crowd to song along and soon, the mood rose up to a top level. The sound was great and overwhelming, in the back of the venue were rear speakers arranged and so, the sound was really like Dolby surround, the both drum sets had given much power to the performance; guitar and bass were played great and did make the sound of the keyboards more organic. The great sound experience was completed by a really fantastic lightshow, in the background large LED screens were arranged which displayed bewitching colour animations; further on stage were big movable light booms installed which change their positions during the show looking like big dinosaurs bowing down their heads.

Altogether the show was a very amazing great experience and when SCHILLER and his band left the stage after about two hours the crowd had given standing ovations and they of course had to return twice for some encores.
