Ever since 2004 when the last STATE OF THE UNION album ‘Impendum’ hit the store shelves it has become fairly silent around Johann Sebastian and at times you would even doubt that a new full-length would come at all, but the waiting had an end in April 2008 with ‘Evol Love Industry’.
…and what has changed. Not very much. Johann is still doing what he did on ‘Impendum’ and in what he’s good. Producing very club-compatible, melodious and emotionally charged tunes. One exception regarding the club orientation is ‘Fall from Grace’ which was already included on the very first Infacted sampler in a different version, which is more of the laid-back, balladry kind and I must say that I do prefer the updated version over the old one. It accentuates the overall mood of the song better and this chorus with the piano company gives me chills (in a positive way). ‘Radio Man’ in turn has everything that a club heart can ask for. The beat runs straight through the boxes into the legs and makes them twitch.
But there are also songs that have both the club affinity and a balladry character. Two songs out of that category are ‘Rollercoaster’ and ‘Nothing at all’ whereas the emotional component is given priority on both tracks. Even though I like both of them, ‘Nothing at All’ has become my favourite by now. Everything adds up perfectly here: The vocals and the melodies which are like caring arms. “I will rescue, I’ll protect you from the hell around you.” and last but not least we have the track ‘Love is Complicated’ ending the album with its highly melodic mid-tempo rhythms.
It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s good. In fact it’s one of the better albums coming out of the so called ‘Future Pop’ genre lately as it still touches, so well done Johann!
