Album Review

`Flowers from Exile´ is the meanwhile sixth release of the Luxembourg-based project ROME after its EP `Berlin´ (2005), the albums `Nera´ (2006), `Confessions d´Un Voleur d´Ames´ (2007), `Masse Mensch Material´ (2008) and the recent single `To Die Among Strangers´ (2009). The singer and songwriter Jerome Reuter wasn’t only the inspiration for the band’s name, but he is also responsible for the lyrics and compositions, whereas Patrick Damiani creates all the arrangements. The latest piece of work, that deals with the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and living in exile, reveals stylistic similarities to famous names such as LEONARD COHEN, NICK CAVE and - in parts - ALEXANDER VELJANOV.

The all in all 12 tracks live on Reuter’s melancholic and dark vocals radiating a special kind of dignity and pain. Provided by acoustic and also classical instruments, the rather restrained soundscape contributes to a special atmosphere and guarantees an appropriate transfer of the long-player’s main topic of being displaced. By using the sounds of the rushing sea and a sad violin playing, the first track `To a Generation of Destroyers´ is an impressive introduction to the album’s prevailing mood that will be dominated by lugubrious and emotional chanson-like pieces about loss and being strange.

If you appreciate ambitious, intellectual songwriting and you are looking for the right soundtrack for a cold autumn evening, you will feel comfortable with this long-player.
