Album Review

With three full-length records, a MCD, and a style headed as Apocalyptic Folk, the duo ROME has made quite a name for themselves in a comparatively short amount of time. After the cooperation with their former label; the legendary brand Cold Meat Industrial had come to an end for whatever reasons the two have found a new home on German label Trisol and with ‘To Die Among Strangers’ offer a harbinger for the upcoming new record ‘Flowers from Exile’ due at the end of June.

The title track is opening the little EP and the interaction of the playful guitar chords and the warm but always reflective sounding vocals of Jerome Reuter intrigue right away and once the violin sends her sad sound over the land the song gets right into your soul without detour. Such a majestic opener but the following ‘Reversion’ actually a revised track from one of their earlier works ‘Nera’ and also here a huge atmosphere builds up instantly while we’re hearing the vocals embraced by the comforting string vibrations of the guitar that during the song’s progression get complemented by an incredibly clear and reverberating drum section that seems like fading into another sphere. ‘Wir Götter der Stadt’ isn’t a German tongued track even if the title suggests otherwise and it as well originates from one of the last albums and spreads just the same captivating charm as the preceding tittles did but with a subliminal sense of longing and farewell. ‘Mourir a Madrid’ breaks away from the more folk and chanson oriented compositions and confronts us with an over 9 minutes long ambient opus with spoken word in very lyrical quality, monumental choirs, massive drums, and gloomy, threatening soundscapes.

After the appetizer we got served with ‘To Die Among Strangers’ I’m more than eager to get my hands on the upcoming album ‘Flowers of Exile’ and my expectations are pretty high after hearing this an dif it’s the same with you after reading this then you should best instantly follow the link to MySpace and check their music out.
