Album Review

The Belgian formation TEXAS TRAUMA is made up of musicians being actively involved in other projects before. In 2006, the band compiled a 10-track demo with the name ‘Invetsigation First’ which ultimately caught the attention of Len Lemeire and Sleepwalking Records, their future label. Len Lemeire then got involved into the production of the band’s debut album ‘Topgun Patsy’, released in early 2009.

A ‘Prologue’ starts the CD with synthetic sitar and tympani outstretching under a thick dark synth layer complemented by the voice of Nadine. It’s nothing to give anyone an idea of the sound TEXAS TRANA are playing, but it makes for a nice little introduction. The first track ‘P/F Girl’ builds upon analogue electronic rhythms and enriches them with the harshness of rock guitars and deep vibrating bass tones rounded off by some enigmatic and surreal lyrics. The rest of the record follows quite a similar make-up. It’s bearing an omnipresent retro theme. The pretty minimalist rhythmic structures all seem to have been crafted with vintage gear and also the melodies are out of time yet radiating a modern tinge after all. Other stand-out tracks for me are ‘The Umbrella Man’ coming up with a nightmarish atmosphere or ‘8 Days a Week’ that cunningly balances between cold electronics, harmonic melodiosity and the raw emotions of rock.

’Topgun Patsy’ is an album that doesn’t re-invent the wheel, because the ingredients are already well-known. But the band gives it an own spirit, an own twist if you want rescuing them from going under in the sea of insignificance.
