When I read the album’s title, I was convinced that `Darkness Prevails´ would be an archaic and rough piece of work. However, I soon experienced that it was wrong to judge this book by its cover. Instead of awaited distorted vocals and brute beats, PULCHER FEMINA’s new long-player comes up with 13 beautiful pop tracks which are pure ear candy and definitely worth listening. Mastermind Roberto Conforti, who founded his project in 1997, firstly worked together with Anna Cerichelli. After releasing their first self-titled demo tape, Roberto and Anna decided to go separate ways. Since that time, Roberto Conforti has been responsible for the albums `Fallen Angel´ (2000) and `Shadows of the Lovers´ (2002). Now let’s return to `Darkness Prevails´ Conforti describes as his way to express how he sees the world.
According to him, he tries to fuse anger and love by tracks such as `Holy War´ or `Love You to Death´. Though the track titles are partly quite martial, they actually radiate a kind of melancholic despair wrapped in crystal-clear arrangements that result in heavenly synth melodies as heard on `Deepest Sins´ and `Broken Hearted´. Contrary to the assumption that lugubrious lyrics like these have to be in line with deeply sad melodies, the danceable tracks always display certain lightness. For example, the club-ready `Face the Fear´ even provides a dream dance-like intro connected to Conforti’s agreeable vocals. My most favourite piece, the balladry `From Here to Infinity´, invites its listeners to dream along and to find inner peace as well as reflection. Therefore, I can warmly recommend `Darkness Prevails´ to anyone who prefers sophisticated synth pop combined with thoughtful lyrics.
