From the very beginning the works of TORPEDO BOYZ seemed blessed. Their first single ‘Gimme A Bassline!’ became a large hit and PUMA picked it for a major TV spot. By the time the debut album ‘Cum On Feel The Boyz’ came out, they’d built quite a reputation for themselves. The album eventually won an Independent Music Award. Every release from there on would be getting large recognition and send the boyz on gradually growing live journeys. ‘Return of the Ausländers’ is their newest assault on club landscape.
‘Don’t Drop The Funky Beat’ does exactly what it proclaims, or doesn’t do it? Anyway it doesn’t drop the beat; actually it’s letting it blow up in your face. That seamlessly continues with the first proper track ‘Fat Man’s Walk’ that kind of forces you back into the 70s when Funk music was on a peak. ‘Ich bin Ausländer (Leider Zum Glück)’ is our first encounter with ODD Daisuke, who tells us his story and thoughts about Germany, compared to his native with a (intentionally) Japanese accent in his delivery that more than just once tempts you to laugh. The sunny weather here right now is the perfect environment for ‘Silly on the beach’ and it wouldn’t surprise me much if the BEACH BOYS were a source of inspiration for the track. The electronically-tinged jaunt ‘Your Input Was Not Correct’ samples the voice of an automatic wake-up call system at a Russian hotel cunningly. How does one come up with such ideas anyway? Closing ‘Maschinenwelt’ lyrically could be a KRAFTWERK song as well, but then again KRAFTWERK wouldn’t be using guitars in a song at all.
It is however the surprisingly unpredictable end of an album that has a pile of good ideas in stock for its listeners and doesn’t forget to add a whole lot of humour to the mixture. Definitely more suitable to play at a party than listening to it at home; just doesn’t work that way!
