Album Review

The band’s name SERUM 114 goes back to Stanley Kubrik’s classic movie ‘Clockwork Orange’. The band first appeared in 2008 with releasing the EP ‘Seid Ihr Bereit?’, preluding the self-titled debut album’s release in August of the same year to generally positive reviews. The album was followed up with a tour together with MILENCOLIN and VOLBEAT. Following hard times the second album ‘Antiheld’ has just dropped on Friday.

‘Die Stadt die wir lieben’ is getting the album off with energy, melody and a lyrical reflection of today’s social circumstances. A kind of doomy riff guides us into the next track of the album which is ‘Ich bin so’, a self-portray giving rise to the question what’s so wrong about someone’s behaviour and finding that it’s just them not being in compliance with standards that are important just for others. ‘Immer gleich’ nails the gas pedals somewhere deep beneath the ground and thus caters for a much more than a simple speed increase. The track propels forth on a sting of endlessly energetic drums, guitars and so forth. What I found very striking initially about ‘Alphatier 2.0’ is the remarkable bass introduction of the track which unfortunately drifts a little bit too much in the background for me. Instead the power guitars are taking over control again. ‘Gegen den Wind’ is one classic melodic example of a punk track that has you dancing and partying in no time while still keeping an ear out for lyrics. The album’s closed with ‘Viel zu lang hier’ with a definite sounding decision.

‘Antiheld’ is in the best sense of the word a classic punk rock album. Don’t expect any ground-breaking new things here but if you’re into punk rock with a message these guys have one.
