Arena, Chemnitz, Germany
13th November 2010
Volbeat, Entombed, The Kandidate

A Scandinavian night was announced at the Arena in Chemnitz and so about 10.000 persons came to see VOLBEAT`s “Beyond Heaven/Above Hell Tour 2010”. The former factory buildings provided a magnificent backdrop for this show. http://www.messe-chemnitz.com/

The Kandidate

They are one of the best talents in the Danish metal scene. As opener they played only 20 minutes that added up to 5 songs. Their show focused on high-speed breakdowns, borrowed from the metalcore and the rather desperate attempt to emphasize sweeping tempo changes. It was kind of hard to get anything of the vocals but they had their fun and they made sure the audience got into a good mood. http://www.myspace.com/thekandidate

Entombed

ENTOMBED is a Swedish death metal band which formed in 1987 under the name of NIHILIST. In the early 1990s their sound had broadened to include hardcore punk and other influences. They have been influenced by bands such as SLAYER, KISS, MOTÖRHEAD and THE MISFITS and so the new style would eventually be described as ‘Death 'n' Roll’. Already the intro indicates the direction: ‘Satan Is Real’ by the LOVIN' BROTHERS - it is dark, sympathetic gloomy. They played a good mix of new and old songs: ‘Volverine Blues’ and at the end of their set ‘Left Hand Path’. The guitars sounded good, but vocally they were not convincing on that evening. http://www.myspace.com/serpentsaints

Volbeat

The stage colorfully glittered like a Christmas tree, illuminated by hundreds of headlights. The band after 2 support acts entered the stage very quickly. There are not many bands that can fill halls in Chemnitz of this size but VOLBEAT succeeded effortlessly. The Danish quartet is the inventor of “Elvis-Metal”. www.myspace.com/volbeat / http://www.volbeat.dk/

Music & Performance
Just as the friendly ‘Olsenbande’ were criminal, VOLBEAT are friendly metal musicians. Of first sound, there is no doubt: Poulsen and his men wanted to have fun. ’16 Dollars’ and ‘Heaven Nor Hell’ were sung along loudly by the audience. Singer Michael Poulsen repeatedly chatted with the fans and animated them to sing the songs together. And so he announced the highlight of the evening with great words: ‘A Sad Man`s Tongue’ - a tribute to JONNY CASH and the good old times. Latest from here, no one could stand still anymore and it came as it had to come: The audience formed circle and mosh pits again and again. This was very unusual for VOLBEAT concerts, but raised a smile with the front man: ‘I Like This’. The cover version of DUSTY SPRINGFIELD's 'I Only Want To Be With You' is exactly as good as ‘Fallen’. After almost two hours then the big finale followed with the anthem for the fans. ‘Thanks’ was played and some guests were allowed to come on stage to sing together with the band.
