Boy Harsher &Special Guest: Kris Baha

BOY HARSHER provide the broken soundtrack of a dystopian reality, nobody else creates such intense and immersive soundscapes as the duo from Northampton, Massachusetts. Augustus Muller develops the substructure of the tracks from precise, powerful beats and sawing synths, while Jae Matthews either breathes ethereally, sings or screams her heart out. These cathartic and magnetizing tracks are a real alternative and not only became real little hits in Neo Dark Wave underground circles. As befits counterculture actors, BOY HARSHER have started their own small indie label, Nude Club Records. After the reissue of the two previous albums, their new album ‘Careful’ was released in February 2019. ‘Careful’ is about love and what it can give you: fear and joy, tenderness and pain.

‘Careful’ was originally intended as a warning - Muller and Matthews felt like they were fading into each other. Phases of destructiveness and complexity of the relationship, but also family ties and very personal struggles flow together on the new album and reflect these very personal struggles between the two. When Matthew’s mother was diagnosed with dementia in 2017 and started showing symptoms, ‘Careful’ took on a whole different meaning. Matthew’s relationship with her parents has always been complicated.

Her father died when she was a teenager and her mother was an alcoholic. The loss of the father was sudden and extreme, the constant feeling and sadness of losing the mother felt like a slow, chronic ailment. ‘Careful’ takes the time to explore these traumas and the impulse to escape. Written mostly in Massachusetts, with a handful of synthesizers and a laptop. For Muller, a minimal set-up is very important in this process. Mixed in Italy with Maurizio Baggio from La Distilleria Studio.
