Founded in 1985 in Münster, EL BOSSO & DIE PING-PONGS were one of the first German Ska bands and later on formed the first wave of German Ska and released two albums before disbanding in 1992. Ever since 2003, the band is back playing live shows. ‘Tag vor dem Abend’ is their third album to date and the first in 20 years. The new album is over its entire length quite a classical representative of its genre. Even though I’m aware of them being one of the earliest bands of the German Ska scene, I think that nowadays they do sound like any other Ska band. I mean, the rich set of wind instruments is there, the rhythm base fits, and there’s even a bit of Indie rock floating around now and then, especially on the opener ‘Nicht das letzte Mal’. The switching between more upbeat songs that make the majority on the album, and slower, at times more emotive tracks, even caters for variety and is going to be loved by fans of genre and of the band for sure. A little remark about the sound quality though. I’m missing quite some details in there. Sounds a little squashier than it has to be at times!
