Album Review
When you get right down to it, AC/DC might be the most reliable band on the planet. So it seems odd that AC/DC who build their reputation on their bombastic, high-energy concerts have only released two live albums before. This unmatched band never once challenged their fans with anything other than straight-up uncomplicated Rock´n´Roll. So there are no surprises on ‘Live at River Plate’. The 19 songs on the two-disc album are a mix of good old favorites like ‘Back in Black’ or ‘You Shoot Me All Night Long’ combined with a few cuts from their most recent album ‘Black Ice’ from 2008 and some songs that work only on stage like a 10-minute version of ‘The Jack’. ‘Live at River Plate’ was recorded in Buenos Aires over three nights in 2009 during the Black Ice World Tour. The shows marked AC/DC’s first appearance there in more than a dozen years, so the audience sounds appropriately pumped.
The band, already on the road more than a year by this point, had perfected their set, which pretty much included the same songs every night. Most of the songs sound like their studio versions. Songs like ‘Thunderstruck’ sound great , sharp and free of any aging sings. However, if you’ve seen the band at any time during the past 22 years, you’ve already heard them perform most of these songs, so it seems always that they have a core setlist containing about a dozen tunes that are played without fail on every tour. For sure, there are still very few rock bands like AC/DC which can detonate arenas and stadiums like AC/DC do. Even without seeing the cannons at the end of the show or lead guitarist Angus Young running like possessed on the stage you can still enjoy the grandiosity of an AC/DC concert just by listening to ‘Live at River Plate’.
