ASHES YOU LEAVE, a name that is now no longer completely unknown and also evokes some memories of already read something about them. Unfortunately I had not the opportunity to listen much from the Croatian Doom/ Gothic Metal band before. So I was really curious what I could expect on their new album ‘The Cure For Happiness’ Which is already their fifth album after all. However, it crystallizes out quickly that this album could not reach over the average grading. The info sheet announces to me that this album is the perfect “soundtrack for suicide” but it was not so bad after all to commit suicide... ok jokes aside... This album is quite solid and down to earth but gets me not to ecstasy at any time and this is too bad because it’s a fact that the band uses a lot of commitment to the cause, many good ideas and this should not be punished with a bad scoring.
This album lacks the real will to implement this idea accordingly to the end. The music seems almost powerless and a properly strong rhythm-guitar would help much providing a richer foundation. But unfortunately this one hides often skilfully. The album starts quite promising with the opener ‘Devil In Disguise’. The singer does the job with a firm hand and there are only a few parts where I feel that the voice is a little bit annoying. This album seems much like forged in one piece which seems quite good at the first glance but there are no real highlights and it bobs almost on the same wave away. This mainly depends on the fact that the mid-tempo parts became really exhausting after some time and in my opinion at least a fast number would have helped for more variety. I could not give more than five points finally however I’m real sorry. Because you could see some real potential in ‘The Cure For Happiness’ in any case, but that should be picked up and implemented into this album or the result will, as here, only be half-baked.
