Album Review

The band, emerging from former members of the Swiss band NUUK, debuted with the album ‘Diary of a Lost’ in 2007 and received overall positive feedback from fans and press alike, followed by some very successful concerts in support of the album. Rolling on to 2008, we can see that Michael Sele and his band weren’t lazy at the time as the successor, entitled ‘A Stranger to Tears’ is about to be released.

And it starts with powerful drum beats to the sound of razor-sharp riffs, before understated electronic beats and chopped sequences come in and Michael Sele’s adjuring chant wafts across the lands of Galilee. He’s the narrator and guides through the story of which you can find a detailed explanation in the interview we did with him recently. ‘This Time’ however, draws upon a different stylistic source and swims through the waters of an electronic form of dark wave and dark or sinister is a perfect description for the mood in this track that retains a classic sound while not neglecting modern means to convey emotion apart from Sele’s moaning vocals. With ‘Psycho Flood’ marks another change in style and mood. It’s challenging with its almost ritual relentless drumming that won’t give you the fraction of a second to rest but with all harshness it undoubtedly has, it bears a sublime spirit with the classical choir and string sequences providing something like a resting isle in a raging sea. Even though ‘Psycho Flood’ admittedly has a club potential I believe that ‘Shadow Dancer’ is the better candidate for heavy rotation and packed dance floors. A straight beat and atmospherics waving through the song like a dense haze. ‘The Lonesome Death of a Goth DJ’ can be filed into the same category even it has much more punch and drive. And the atmosphere during the verses is almost creepy. A look into the booklet for the lyrics couldn’t hurt either as the song is dealing with a rather sad side-effect of the more and more commercially oriented Goth parties.

With ‘Into Black’ the band sinks deeper into the depths of depression and strikes more quiet tones with a longing piano melody and subtle string accentuation later being enriched with wider synth layers and laid-back drums just o turn it all around again with ‘One Day’ sending harder electronic sounds out of the speakers, playing with various electronic means and highly alienated riffs. ‘Simple Death’ then unleashes a string of elaborate drumming, contrasted by extensive gloomy synth floods which are no mach to the threatening and sometimes even raging guitar lines and just like them the vocals swing between transfigured melancholy and moments full of infuriation. Like the debut also this album is ended by a long track with a French title ‘Essai Noir’ softly guiding you into other spheres with acoustic guitar, dreamy rhythms , electronic gadgets and a piano after an emotional rollercoaster rushed over you over the course of 15 songs.

‘A Stranger to Tears’ is an album with many facets, covering a broad field of emotions that are mostly of darker nature. The eclectic drum arrangement won’t give rise to any boredom and equipped with such charismatic vocals, I’m sure ‘A Stranger to Tears’ will become another success for the Swiss four-piece.
