Album Review

THE BEAUTY OF GEMINA found its way to the scene five years ago and has under the belt three albums with ‘Iscariot Blues’ to be added on. Their sound is enriched by the influence of Blues, Goth Rock, New wave and few other trends and it all adds up to something that sounds really fresh and very charming due to the fusion done tastefully and with a real touch of class. The first part of the album definitely feels bluesy with hints of New Wave whilst the other part is more experimental and rockier. As a whole they are melancholy but there’s something wonderfully uplifting. The first song ‘Voices Of Winter’ gets under one’s skin immediately and refuses to let go - it begs many re-listens and stays behind echoing. As most songs it’s very catchy with a very good sense for melody, Michael Sele vocal is expressive, fitting with its texture to the feel of the music, and quite classy in itself - as will be evident throughout the album as well, and there is an atmosphere that compliments the song in its best possibility. These marks represent the other songs as well and although there is an obvious attention to detail in song-writing it doesn’t feel overlaboured and it retains an “organic” feel.

The lyrical content seems to be in the same vein of their criteria of how they chose their band’s title... “and it had to be mysterious also and however not too abstract” (Michael Sele) - there is clarity and the mystery lays in the way they underline aspects of life with that heightened sensitivity of the life’s vivid and thus inexplicable moments. They’re not only well written, but possess a natural and unpretentious intelligence. The themes also stray into a commentary on the world (i.e. in ‘Dark Revolution’), but in no ways are those boring jeremiads or preaching sermons. In fact it’s very hard to comb this album for weaknesses, they are negligible and don’t matter at all. Although I have mentioned the first song, which indeed is very memorable and extraordinary, it’s hard to pick out more favourites, not because the songs blend into one another or because they don’t match the mark, but they are all simply outstanding, interesting and all give a lot to the listener in return for eagerness to engage. They are without a doubt very talented; the album is pure joy to listen to in its many aspects and one to return to again and certainly one not to miss out on.
