Album Review

DEADEND IN VENICE is a Melodic Death Metal band with focus on a female vocalist that formed in 2008. After producing a demo, they’ve played alongside bands as TRISTANIA, FINNTROLL and TANZWUT. Their debut album ‘See you On The Ground’ has just been released and they’re planning to support it with a tour in the autumn as well as playing some festivals during this summer. The Death Metal vocals of Litzba doesn’t always sit that great with the clean female voice of Klein. Oil and water just don’t mix in the way they’ve approached it. Hers is just far too soft and the contrast is a bit of a fierce beast and beauty as a fragile flower, too much sugar in a coffee you wanted strong and bitter especially when it comes to songs that are trying to convey some intense emotions. It’s difficult to take seriously a song about ‘Hate Sweet Hate’ with a caramelised vocal that is more concerned with its own beauty rather than the message of the song.

In second one, ‘Personal Decay’, she orders you to ‘Get out of my way’... in such a feeble way, you’d just push that flower out of your way as a weed, she’s hardly scary, and you’re more likely to laugh at her than respect the boundaries she’s unable to set. When she talks about the other scaring her to the bone, again, it’s just a voice bereft of the ability to express the emotion; it’s a mere singing exercise. The music is great and powerful, the male vocal is great, but she just spoils it. Those songs could have been stronger and more expressive if she upped her own game or if they had someone else to sing the female parts. She’s blissfully absent from ‘War’ not to dilute the commanding force of that song. Several tracks have the unfortunate tendency to blend into one to the other; more diversity of sound could have benefited the release.

I can understand that they’re trying to be different and make their own mark on the genre, i.e. sometimes going to the more classic Heavy metal guitar solos, the pronounced focus on the female voice, they just need to fine tune it and it’ll be excellent all way round. So for now, let’s just say it’s a good and promising album.
