When the American actress JULIETTE LEWIS recruited her band THE LICKS to record the debut album `Like a Bolt of Lightning´ in 2004, I wasn’t surprised at all. Singing actresses or acting singers aren’t a new phenomenon in the business, but I expected this lady to try her hand at singing and songwriting in particular, as she has always been one of the most versatile and talented actresses with a knack for weird characters and representing a perfect combination of Lolita and hellcat. Therefore, JULIETTE LEWIS might have been made for a second career in the Rock business. By releasing `You’re speaking my Language´ (2005) and `Four on the Floor´ (2006), JULIETTE AND THE LICKS proved that the formation wasn’t only a flash in the pan. Now, four years and an extensive touring including club gigs as well as festival appearances later, the 36-years-old all-rounder is delivering her first solo album `Terra Incognita´.
Fortunately, JULIETTE LEWIS is a serious songwriter and charismatic singer whose vamp-like vocals always seem to hover between genius and madness. Let’s have a look on some tracks. The psychedelic `Romeo´ is a dreamy and dragging song she sings in a child-like way whereas the dirty up-tempo `Fantasy Bar´ captivates with a Punk attitude. The title track is a cool, guitar driven Rock piece with an explosive chorus. The catchy and jolly `Uh Huh´ was strongly influenced by Pop music and makes JULIETTE LEWIS sound like STEVIE NICKS. Generally, she and her co-songwriter Omar Rodriguez-Lopez are responsible for a complex and exciting album which may also impress its listeners due to the matured lyrics and multi-faceted soundscape made by a grown-up and life-experienced diva. Well done!
