Australia’s IKON might not be the name that springs to mind when compiling a list of influential Gothic Rock bands of the past twenty years. But they have one of the most consistent in all of that time. The band’s mix of Post-Punk and Dark Wave has always been straightforward and to the point. Even when many bands jumped on other musical trends around the millennium IKON stuck it out and kept releasing quality material. It comes as no surprise then that after twenty years in existence we’re due a reminder as to how good the band have always been with some reissues courtesy of Ecozone.
The band’s sophomore album ‘Flowers For The Gathering’ is the subject here and like other reissues it gets the standard “re-master & bonus disk” treatment which pads the album out to twenty-two songs. The original album has aged very well. The electronic elements and production may date the sound, but the song writing on tracks like ‘Somewhere Else’, ‘Stranger I’ve Become’, ‘In Trust I Return’, ‘Beyond Grey Skies’ and ‘For Eternity’ displays a timeless quality. The second disc has a few nice surprises up its sleeve. Songs like ‘Sleepless Pt 1’, ‘Answers To Nothing’, ‘Decline Of The Anti-Christ’, and ‘Somewhere Else (In Passing)’ are all gems in their own right and well worth the price of the extra disc.
Again the electronic elements of the album sound a little dated by today’s standards, and despite the re-mastering efforts the production sounds very retro. But this doesn’t alter the fact that this is still a fine album that has stood the test of time, which a fair few of the band’s contemporaries would have trouble matching.
