NECROWRETCH is a French Death Metal band that was formed in 2008 and so far has released two demos as well as two EPs. Their debut record ‘Putrid Death Sorcery’ is released almost exactly five years after their inception and defines their own style in a more concrete way. The opener ‘Ripping Souls Of Sinners’ provides a brutal and fast track with screamed, harsh vocals and a good amount of groove provided by the driving drums. ‘Purifying Torment’ includes tempo changes between slower and more shredding parts, echo effects used on the vocals create tension and depth before the song ends rather unexpectedly. The following ‘Goat-Headed’ continues very straight-forwardly and with a song structure, that sounds a bit chaotic at first but is a prominent feature on ‘Putrid Death Sorcery’ and ensures that no song is exactly like the other.
Guitar as well as bass solo can be heard occasionally and underline the technical demand that is required. The lyrics are only to be understood with difficulty or patient indulgence, but words like blasphemy, sinners, bestiality or torment are frequently heard and speak for themselves. ‘Putrid Death Sorcery’ incorporates very slow parts, which are contrasted with melodic, speedy guitar riffs. The following track ‘Impious Plague In Catacombs’ provides a similar variety in tempo, although the vocals sound particularly evil and minatory. ‘Spewed From Hell’ is more concrete and some influences from Thrash Metal can be heard. Moreover, ‘The Antrophomancer’ is a very uncompromising piece of music, with Old School tendencies and a sagging interlude. In general, the songs are relatively short and straight-forward, providing a modern symbiosis of speed, brutality and groove. Definitely recommended for fans of solid Death Metal!
