Album Review
German-French ensemble LAMINUSX was formed in 2004, supported acts such as SUBWAY TO SALLY, JESUS ON EXTASY, MEGAHERZ, DIE HAPPY amongst others. In 2007 they recorded their first album ‘One Man Show’ which threw a red hot spanner into works with its lyrics and stance that ruffled few feathers by its strong and radical stance, it provoked praise, criticism and discussions alike. It created enough interest that LAMINUSX also cooperated with the Goethe Institute in Paris and several French schools. In 2009 they’ve engaged in creating ‘Vitamin’ to supplement the masses with the very much needed iron of their musical verve to pump through their veins and their meaningful lyrical input of antioxidants to stir the brains.
The album is full to the brim with raw energy, push and vehemence. The trilingual lyrics (in English, German and French) bring into your system social critique at times given via self-deprecating, ironic gist and question worldviews which lead to dire and terrible situations and as the world is in turmoil and heads for the abyss (yet again) - pounding on and challenging consciences of their listeners as well as ear drums. The harsh vocals easily slip into melodic choruses and don’t lose an ounce of oomph in the process either. Slipping from one language to another is smooth and unexpectedly fitting, the linguistic choice proves to be spot on in the way it complements the song and furthers its mood and import. The “French” tracks i.e. ‘Ton Secret’ (Your Secret) have an extra dimension of melancholy.
The “German” i.e. ‘Denken ist schwer’ (…for example, ‘Thinking is hard’) are heaviest, the most urgent and at their most pounding with Hardcore Punk / Metal feel. The “English” (i.e. ‘Vitamin’) sway more to the Rock / Indie territory and give out ironic gist. At times I get the SYSTEM OF A DOWN zing to liken LAMINUSX to. The trio filled their album with razor-wire riffs, working the frets, drums and vocal chords like they’re on inspired fire, confronting the listener on all fronts with determination. If you want to get through the coming winter (world) scathed awake or just enjoy yourself, ‘Vitamin’ on Dr LAMINUSX prescription is what you need, it’s a truly good one.
