Label: India Records / Rough Trade

Album Review

Seth Lakeman is an English folk singer and songwriter who is as a multi-instrumentalist most often associated with the fiddle, tenor guitar, viola and banjo. Nominated for the prestigious Mercury Music Prize, Lakeman has belonged to several musical ensembles, including one with his two brothers, fellow folk musicians Sam and Sean Lakeman but has most recently established himself as a solo headlining act.

‘Hearts and Minds’ is his fifth solo album. According to its predecessor, fans would expect a release that is more into the rock genre - far from all! ‘Hearts and Minds’ comes up with a lot of folk songs full of passion and vitality. Well, maybe it’s too folky…! Seth Lakeman is more than just capable to play folk tunes and to present his musical skills… and even the songs are solid pieces of folk music - no doubt about it! The thing is, that there’s no place for further development… moreover exploitation of a genre is quite dangerous!

There’s no need to discuss that ‘Hearts and Minds’ is an enjoyable album, first and foremost in its calm and slow down parts, but the aggressive overdevelopment causes a lack of variety and really outstanding songs. It is a functional background music release for your local bar round the corner…
