Review Flash

German/ Croatian singer-songwriter Antun Opic, once of punk-cabaret band STROM & WASSER, releases a solo effort with the help of his old guitar teacher. Nice. But how to categorise music this diverse? It has the energy and punk ethos of his previous band at times, but throws everything into the bag throughout. ‘Hospital’ is all giddy plucking, folky bounce and crazy vocals, there’s Balkan brilliance and a chorus to die for on bluesy madness ‘The Informer’ and a gentle swing and subtle instrumentation on 'Troubled Waltz’. At times tender and lush, at others bursting with creative zeal, this is immense fun. Tuning into Antun’s odd vocal style and strange inflections may be a slight barrier, but losing yourself in this joyous racket is surely a worthy antidote to the onset of Winter.

Conclusion: Let not the World Music tag put you off. This is quality stuff.
