Sometimes, don’t ask me why, I agree to review a band that plays a rather extreme style of Metal. AMONGST THE ASHES belong to that category, maybe Mohammed Hallaji himself asked really nicely (yup this happens regularly). AMONGST THE ASHES is a one-man band consisting of only Mohammed Hallaji. Hallaji hails from Tehran, Iran and he is a Death Metal multi-instrumentalist. The dude is quite skilled on bass, guitar and drums (he does the vocals too but those are the downside of his musical endeavours). Musically all of this is brutally played and well composed but the vocals constantly remind me that I don’t like extreme Metal. You have to listen pretty hard sometimes to realize the vocals are in English. What bothers me is not that the vocals are harsh but that there is no letting down and vocals-wise no taking prisoners. If Hallaji would just here and there slow down and stop screeching and screaming I could get behind the musicality of this project but this way I find it hard to bear.
Conclusion: For fans of harsh vocals.
