American band DROWNED SORROW was formed in 2000 and through the years the musicians started to develop their own approach to heavy metal. The formation already released a couple of demos and the new EP entitled ‘Fittings at the Coffin Shop’. Speaking about the latest work I don’t even know how to put this because I was really expecting something much better. Actually I managed to listen to the album twice and the second time was necessary to realize if my first impression was right and so it was indeed.
The CD is not totally bad anyway and it definitely has its moments; if we examine all the components of music separately then every single instrument sounds just great and the vocals produce a fairly good impression. But in fact as all these things are blended in the tracks the melody is almost lost besides the quality of the songs suffers a lot. Singing parts which attack a listener from time to time begin to irritate and the rhythm that you already got used to changes dreadfully and there starts something rather strange and incomprehensible. As if you compose a puzzle and when pieces don’t fit you still try to combine them so the result looks odd and doesn’t remind the original picture. Thus there’s almost the same story with the CD, unfortunately.
Of course the concept of the album seems to be interesting yet it’s hard to concentrate on the lyrics in order to understand it. At a pinch I can also name some songs which may be easier to listen to comparing to the rest of the material like ‘The Amputee Mine’ or ‘Receiving Presents at a Funeral’. But still those pieces are not enough to save the day so ‘Fittings at the Coffin Shop’ turned out to be not so good at least to my taste.
