Album Review

After over one decade of creating electronic music, the creative mind behind OIL10 figured it was time for a retrospective which led after lots of reworking and remixing to the release of ‘Retrofuture’.

The opening track ‘Airwave’, which is a creeper in regards to its pace, also introduces a sound element that is repeatedly used within many of the tracks this compilation include like on ‘Propaganda’ or ‘Synthetic Sin’ if you need a few examples. It’s a noisy pad adding an extensive depth effect and width to each composition it is used in aside from a sheer stream of melody. As Gilles is also profoundly influenced by film scores and respective composers such as Vangelis or John Williams it shouldn’t be a surprise for anybody that several tracks paying tribute to this face of his works would find a home on ‘Retrofuture’ as well. The first outstanding one is called ‘Grand Illusion’ utilizing a massive synth build up to give birth to a subliminal soundscape that could as well be from a sci-fi movie that hasn’t been shot up to this point extended with pretty generic club-friendly beats. With ‘Second Moon’ we’re going to leave Earth’s atmosphere for a trip into space where washes of synth atmospherics tower up, rove around and then evaporate to come back shortly thereafter repeating the cycle. For ‘Fade to Black’ all the drum synths get a break for 4+ minutes as it’s entirely basing on cunningly interspersed layers and samples flushed with a menacing hum and orchestral breakdowns. ‘The Beast’ first gives preference to the monotony of techno-ish beats relaxes everything a little soon by employing monumental synths.

On ‘Counter Clock’ which releases us out of ‘Retrofuture’ the heart-beats (Describes their sound exactly) only play secondary roles. Atmosphere, mood is what counts here and it is a mood of farewell we’re confronted with transported through plaintive atmospherics. Fans of well-crafted electronica and cinematic ambience can give their ears something new to crave for with ‘Retrofuture’ but also the ones who already own certain releases of OIL10 will find their money’s worth invested as some new tracks are waiting as well.
