Album Review

I guess you don’t have to be a philosopher to figure out who’s the man behind this project. So Sebastian R. Komor has added another project to his varied musical work and the first output goes by the name of ‘Das EP’.

The title ‘Love your Neighbour’ can only be a joke for if you play that song really loud as suggested in the opening sequence your  neighbour is going to break through your door and give you a fair kick in the ass - or calling the police. The song is simply a relentless, technoid base-drum monster for the club temples! The next track ‘State of Destruction’ is not any less of harsh matter but it’s much closer to the ambient and electronica corner than the previous track would ever get with elaborate, distorted industrial rhythms and shadowy atmospheres and samples enveloping it. The following ‘Triggerfinger’ just lacks that ingenuity of the last track and is to put it bluntly a generic - if perfectly produced - dancing track with a few vocal commands mixed in.

‘Beat Around The Bushes’ doesn’t reveal it’s true nature right away opening with a surprisingly calm and spherical intro before the bass drum celebrates its comeback but nevertheless this tune is much more of a pleasure to listen to as it brings back the multi-layered programming and is burning up a fireworks of complexly constructed synth gadgetry and luring ambience. ‘The AntiKrist’ which is closing ‘Das EP’ builds up darkly and menacing but while still retaining an unashamed affinity to the club floor it has still enough details hidden within its murk to postpone its expiration date way beyond the 2-listens mark and passes within a sinister stream of noise-inflicted fear.

Before I started listening to ‘Das EP’ I expected nothing more and nothing less than another offset of the TBM style but I now I have to give Sebastian R. Komor some credit for not entirely following this beaten path. I mean, yes there are songs clearly assigned and obligated to that style - which are my least favourite tracks - but in-between Sebastian shows his skills as a seasoned programmer and producer and turns the ship around before hitting the iceberg so now it’s a thumbs up from me for this release. Clearly better than I thought even though I wouldn’t have needed those above mentioned tracks! Suffice to say the production quality-wise beats anything offered in that sector.
