ORDO ROSARIUS EQUILIBRIO’s brand of apocalyptic ambient folk music has been seducing ears for seventeen years now. That is pretty good going for any band, but ORE have also had the added stress of a significant line-up change as well as a name change. Usually that can spell disaster for a band but since 2001 the duo of Petterson and Larsen has been consistently upping their game, the result of which is this new EP that will serve as a precursor for the forthcoming album ‘Songs 4 Hate & Devotion’.

There is something awfully warm and reassuring about ORE’s mix of neo-classical, ambient industrial, and neo folk. While dark and sombre it taps into that space in the back of your mind where The Brothers Grimm and nursery rhymes about plague and beheadings are welcome. The title track ‘Do Angels Never Cry, And Heaven Never Fall’ is driven by martial beats and synthesized brass that feels like the rallying cry for the downtrodden and maligned. The acoustic version that follows, with its orchestral flourishes and lead piano, however feels like a sombre confession that creates a strange dichotomy of pride and remorse between the first tracks.

‘Reaping The Fallen, The Second Harvest’ does the exact same for the track that originally appeared on the 1995 album - replacing the claustrophobic sense of the original track with a far more tranquil facelift. The final track ‘Who Stole the Song…’ is very light-hearted and almost wistful in comparison with Petterson doing his best Leonard Cohen impression that brings the EP to close on a very positive feeling. If this EP is a preview of things to come then we are in for some great work from the duo. The sound quality and the build of the songs are utterly brilliant and their emotional resonance shouldn’t fail to grab you. On the whole this has done its job at peaking my interest for the next release.
