Album Review
AMORPHEAD was formed in 2007, at first only consisting of a bassist and a drummer. By degrees, their line-up got completed. The first demo was recorded in January 2009, and in July 2009 the first EP, entitled ‘Psychotic’ was released. ‘Dreaming (Intro)’ starts in a slow manner, at first including acoustic guitars and whispered vocals, then presenting the first riffs. The title giving track, ‘Psychotic’ starts in a snatchy way, and soon the first real vocals kick in. From a musical point of view, AMORPHEAD (a mixture between Amorphis and Motörhead?) can be described as Thrash Metal with harsh vocals and rather grooving elements.
‘I’m Unreal’ starts with a slayer-orientated riff and Machine Head - like vocals. Also, this song possesses a nice melody and guitar solo at the third quarter. The following song ‘Rabhead’ is very voice-dominated at the first half, but then goes over towards a technical aspect, which I personally really like, since AMORPHEAD’s musicians are seem rather talented. ‘Critical Mind’ again commences rather slow and instrumentally, but then continues in a thrashing way with the usual screamed vocals and a guitar solo. With ‘Awakening’, ‘Psychotic’ dies away in a similar way as it started.
All in all, this album is quite nice for a newcomer band, serving modern metal with technical elements. Still, the vocals at times could vary more.
