Album Review
OOMPH! - founded in 1989 and located in Germany - are well known artists all over the world. After more than 20 years in music business and already 10 released albums, now they have produced a special one, an English sung record. This is their first album away from their native language to get further success especially in an international way. They already got an honest fan base beyond the local constraints. If you know OOMPH! and their hits, you’ll notice that this record doesn’t bring something really new, because it is based on their greatest hits, translated into the English language. And that was their target - just change the language!
It should have been quite difficult to tailor the melodies to the sound of the English language. But it fits perfectly and doesn’t arouse the meaning that it was something which OOMPH! had better defaulted. No, it’s definitely enrichment for every fan of this band and for those who are interested in harmonic sounds and good lyrics. Striking songs like ‘Augen auf’ or ‘Gott ist ein Popstar’ are re-mastered in a way that I would say they are not a cheap copy. It sounds a bit like HIM, but it stays distinctive OOMPH! This step into a new direction works. But it’s probably an exception - what a pity!
OOMPH! are set to release their English speaking “Best Of” (all single hits of the last three records) album due February 26th (for Germany, Switzerland and Austria) and March 1st (all other territories). The likeable Braunschweig based trio re-arranged their greatest hits for this very purpose. As always with OOMPH!, the album is a mixture of various styles, be it metal, EBM or Gothic. It is still OOMPH! but different! Conclusion to this album: There is nothing more to say than - ready or not, they're coming...
