The 69 Eyes, The Fright

When the guys of THE 69 EYES are coming to town, there's usually turmoil guaranteed, and especially if there's a reason for a special celebration. In this case it's regarding their tenth studio album 'X' and people from near and far followed the call to Bochum. As support, German band THE FRIGHT heated up the audience.

The Fright

THE FRIGHT are heading from Jena, Germany and present, as they call it themselves, tough-minded, dark Rock’n’Roll, or more simple, Horror Rock’n’Roll. So far, the band released three albums. After ‘Dacabre’ in 2000 and ‘Born to be Dead’ in 2009, the year 2012 saw the release of the self-titled album ‘The Fright. THE FRIGHT consists of Lon (vocals, rhythm guitars), Danny (lead guitars), Kain (bass) and Seares (drums). /

Music & Performance
THE FRIGHT is a horror punk outfit that came together a good decade ago to celebrate classic horror themes combined with punk music. This evening there were opening for THE 69 EYES and according to some people’s reactions I guess some fans were around. As for myself, even though the guys were posing like hell, which in turns proved a good thing for photographers, there was actually nothing special about the thing altogether. Punk rock, well-presented but with no edges whatsoever. Nevertheless, these were a few enjoyable minutes-with the guys who made some people dance at least and left the stage soon under applause

The 69 Eyes

The beginnings of THE 69 EYES are going back to 1990 when they were founded as a Sleaze and Garage Rock band in Helsinki. Through local gigs they earned a contract with a Finnish label, they’ve released their first albums on before getting signed to the renowned Roadrunner Records label in 1999, which also meant a huge step forward in their career with the first internationally released album ‘Wasting The Dawn’. The single, spawned from the record became an instant hit and brought another boost of popularity for them. Within the years to come, they’d be enlarging their fan base significantly, as well as expanding their touring schedule to countries such as the US, Mexico and even Japan. 2009 then was the year for them to release their tenth studio album ‘Back in Blood’. The latest album, ‘X’, hot the stores in September 2012 and is now followed by a tour. THE 69 EYES are Jyrki 69 (vocals), Bazie (guitar), Timo-Timo (guitar), Archzie (bass) and Jussi 69 (drums). / /

Music & Performance
THE 69 EYES have a good reason to celebrate: With over 20 years since the band's first album 'Bump'n'Grind came out, the band has just put out their latest effort, titled 'X' and being nothing but the celebration as it is in fact their 10th studio album. Reason enough to spend a couple of days in Germany, satisfying a craving audience. Soon after the rebuilding of the stage was completed, the stage filled with the driving force of 'Love Runs Away' that immediately hooked the audience, and with the following few songs only pushing them further into a state of trance bringing forward one celebration dance after the other. The band did a very reduced to the essentials show altogether. It's not like they didn't are to throw in some poses here and there, but overall it was quite a straight adventure, a focus on the music and its authentic presentation to the fans who expected nothing less from their heroes.

The undoubtedly best pose was Jyrki shaking his hips like a 70s rock star on the drum pedestal with the microphone stand on top. The set was focusing on tracks off the new album requited with sheer admiration and some sing-a-longs with some classics added for good measure. One of the new album's track that hooked me the most was the Western-Country-ish 'Borderline'. Very interesting angle on the genre. With a three-song encore that of course included 'Lost Boys', the guys left a happy crowd that would draw on these memories for some time to come.
