It may be hard to define if TWILIGHT are an actual band, a collaboration of several US musicians active in other bands (KRIEG, LEVIATHAN, NACHTMYSTIUM or LURKER OF CHALICE, to name a few) or simply a project. Either way, on 17th of march 2014, they are going to release their third album ‘III: Beneath Trident’s Tomb’, which is presumably also their final one, since they already announced their split-up.
‘III: Beneath Trident’s Tomb’ features six songs with a total play-time of 41 minutes. The opener ‘Lungs’ foreshadows the prevailing style – depressive, monotonous and mostly slow, sagging Black Metal with an extremely raw production and harsh, inscrutable and almost unintelligible lyrics. The riffs are mostly constructed on disharmonic and tension-producing intervals and tunes – although the song structures include variety ranging from slow to extremely fast, even within one song (for example ‘Seek No Shelter Fevered Ones’), the overall mood is very dark, steady and uninflected.
On ‘Below Light’, for instance, electronic and industrial influences are employed. However, the album at times also includes passage, which appear more like an assemblage of distorted noises than properly-written music. Although this is very much the intention behind TWILIGHT, listening and actually indulging this album becomes a very challenging task. By combining depressive elements, harshness and noise effects, a very disturbing effect is created which is certainly not too easy to absorb. This record is probably only something for very die-hard fans of harsh, Depressive Black Metal, and even then, one probably has to be very patient to extract some beauty of ‘III: Beneath Trident’s Tomb’.
