Album Review
With 12 tracks, this must be an album, right? Well, yes, but 11 of the tracks are different versions of the title track, with only the Black Lipstick Remix of ‘Jack You Up’ standing as being something other than a remix of the title track. Thankfully, the interpretations are wildly varied - to the extent that it’s hard to recognise the tracks as all having their origins in the same source material. While you may sometimes ponder if rendering a track unrecognisable isn’t taking the idea of remixing a bit far, it’s fair to say that this particular collection of re-workings is nothing if not interesting.
The driving guitars of the ‘Scandinavian Cock Mix’ make it a standout, and KMFDM have delivered the goods one would reasonably expect. The ‘Mustard Pimp Remix’ is a nasty EBM take on the track, that’s drugged and woozy and aggressive all at the same time. COMBICHRIST are worthy of mention too for providing their take on the track. Taking the good with the not so good, it would be a mistake to complain that the whole premise of this release is excessive: that’s the whole point, and it’s all a part of the band living up to their name.
