Album Review

‘Demokratischer Sektor’, the newest release from the construction site of PATENBRIGADE: WOLFF, is not a regular album. On one hand it’s a collection of club remixes and on the other hand there are new songs dealing with a specific topic: The uprisings of the construction workers in East Berlin.

These remixes I mentioned before are unlike the usual tracks of the PATENBRIGADE very club-oriented but cover a wide range of styles. The ‘Blutfuß Clubmix’ relies very much its pounding beats and mixes it with distorted remixes. Vocals are not included but therefore you can hear various speech samples which are telling the story of the song instead and what KIEW made out of ‘Ostberliner Bauarbeiter’ well... it sounds like KIEW a bit “calmer” than what’s usual but noise and craziness are still on the agenda. The first of the new songs is called ‘Mauerradio’ and has those lovely ambient atmospheres the PATENBRIGADE is well-known for and even it’s not strictly aiming for the clubs you can dance to it as well but you shouldn’t forget to listen to the lyrics by a cold robotic voice as well. The album also contains two remixes of the track: an Oldschool Club Mix which sounds just like that but is rather ordinary and one that confused me a bit at first. No electronics but a mixture of Jazz, Soul and Rock with a powerful female vocalist.

The one of the new tracks, which impressed me the most, is ‘Karl-Eduard von Schnitzler’. It’s a huge mash-up of soundscapes and noises creating a dark and menacing atmosphere. PATENBRIGADE: WOLFF provides all the clubbers with enough fodder to dance a while and deliver some German contemporary history with the new tracks. The early birds among you should hurry up to get the special edition of ‘Demokratischer Sektor’ enclosed in a Metal Box.
