Single Review
TORUL is based on Slovenia and in the 1990s already gained some recognition but would be putting out an evergreen with the ‘Waterproof Theme’ from 2002. TORUL released quite some stuff afterwards but apparently that wouldn’t reach this tracks status. That might now change with TORUL returning with a new album and a single ‘Try’ which is our subject now.
The first mix we’re hearing when pushing the play button is the original mix of the title track, melding a pure synth pop sound with a slice of trance and a voice that suits this track perfectly. You can listen to that song again and again without it getting boring. Something I couldn’t say really about the ‘SA-X90 Remix’ of that song. The clicking rhythm section feels out of place for me on this song. The ‘Angeltrap Remix’ on the other hand is a nice rendition in a retro fashion with minimalist, bleeping sounds. ‘Take Me Home’ is only sparsely filled with wide melodies; rather it is filled with creaking sounds, a slightly club-oriented rhythm and benefits from the good vocal performance. AQUALLITE’s rendition of the ‘Waterproof Theme’ presents a multi-layered base of beats and rhythms while FROZEN PLASMA placed their emphasis on a melodic design which highlights the vocal delivery until it become a little harsher for just a little while on the chorus. The last track on the single is another take on ‘Try’ and labelled ‘Try Something Different’ which is exactly what the creator’s done. This just reminds remotely of the original with most of the synthetic tracks replaced by organic orchestration and a gritty feel, more like a rock song.
I won’t be doing many words in my conclusion. Just let me add that we have a very solid track here bundled with a few remixes that more or less convince. Well, I could’ve done without the ‘SA-X90 Remix’. The originals stand for quality and I’m hoping the new album is able to maintain the same level.
