Album Review

If musical bands would be the measure of joy, happiness and beauty in the world, TORUL would be the highest pleasure. Objectively today this is one of the brightest stars on the underground scene. Even if they still play as an opening act – they manage to become the main opening act, and make the show which is discussed as much as the headliners. But the secret is quite simple. While all those bands which for years and decades are trying nothing better but to copy DEPECHE MODE or at least to copy the best copies of DEPECHE MODE, stealing music from each other and copying themselves, TORUL is making history. And the new ten pearl-tracks under the title 'The Measure' make the rest of the modern electronic scene desperately miserable.

The first teaser was the single ‘All’ which was released rather to trick the listener. The song sounds quite similar to the previous TORUL's works. But you had to see foxy TORUL's smile as he said, ‘All’ is great, but it gives no impression of the whole album. There are also other songs which could present the connection to the previous releases, such as ‘The Balance’ or ‘Lonely Night’. However, before you turn 'The Measure' on, you better forget all you heard before! And I'm talking not just about TORUL's stuff. Just forget everything you knew about electronic scene and everything you've been listening to last years. Because TORUL is going to blow your mind! 'The Measure' is a mystical, magical seashell – which you listen to and hear all the past lives you went through. You get the first goose-bumps from the very beginning and you've got them till the very end.

It would be not completely honest to say that TORUL totally belongs to the electronic scene. It just happened that they now associated with older colleagues like DE/VISION and MESH. In fact the musical background of each of the members of TORUL is much richer and not just different from the current situation on the electronic scene, but also differs within the band. However those three Slovenian guys already proved that they are just an amazing combination.

Torulsson, the mastermind and the producer of the band, is responsible for the electronic canvas of TORUL. The opening song ‘Lonely Night’ from the first beats surprises with the nostalgic wave from the 80s. Bit by bit and song by song ‘The Measure’ blooms with different sounds. Through the web of the shooting synthesizers’ effects, the melodies turning into the relaxing beach-kind lounge music and ended up with minimal and quite simple tune. The electronic pieces are sewed with dirty grunge guitars which sting like nasty jellyfishes. But they never disturb, as they gently and accurately provided by a perfectionist. The guitar lines smoothly changing from the burning scars on the melody through the bitter crying to the bright colourful fountain. And of course the jewellery of the band – amazing vocalist, who just keeps pushing his limits far away and surprises with the new roles and further stages of his own spectrum. On this album there are possible to hear not just impressive powerful vocal parts, for which we love TORUL, but also mystical echoed voice, reflecting from the sides of your own conscience.

TORUL's music came out from dreams and belongs to it. Such pieces as ‘Higher’, ‘Hearts’, ‘We Grow’ - those are the songs you cannot compare to anything now. Those are the melancholic anthems of the new musical generation. The ‘Discrepancy’ is the clear statement: “I never give in when you wanted to bond me / And I never care when you want me to give in / And I never care, when I see things get dirty / And I never care when you try to persuade me / That I shouldn't be dreaming of the better and cleaner world / Not even if I die“. The album is finished with the broken musical box melody and the fireworks. Probably the celebration of the new dreams and the new challenges. The new level was created which will be quite hard to reach. With 'The Measures' TORUL not just jumped over their own heads once again. This album is the new measure for the further generations and new releases. It is a Supernova of the electronic music which hopefully opened the new chapter in musical history.
