placebo germany2026Sometimes a story doesn’t begin at the beginning, but in the echo - a guitar chord that lingers like a memory, a voice that feels as though it has carried through the years without ever growing quieter. Three decades after their debut, PLACEBO return to that very echo and realise it never truly disappeared.

Back in 1996, at the height of Britpop, this band was a disruption. While others celebrated beer, nation and nostalgia, Brian Molko sang of androgyny, addiction and alienation. It was music like an open secret: vulnerable, provocative and radically honest. Songs such as ‘Nancy Boy’ and ‘36 Degrees’ were not hits in the conventional sense, but statements - sharp-edged, uncomfortable, necessary.

With ‘Placebo RE:CREATED’, the band are not simply reissuing their debut, but reinterpreting it - closer to a director’s cut than a remaster. Revisiting the original master tapes, they have added something no studio can manufacture: three decades of live experience. These songs have evolved on stage, night after night, city after city - growing, becoming rawer, sometimes more fragile. The live setting has always been where PLACEBO truly come into their own.

Anyone who has witnessed Molko’s voice cut through a room knows this is not about nostalgia. It is a dialogue between past and present. The new versions still carry the nervous energy of the 1990s, but also the force of a band that has learned to trust itself. It is not about improvement, they say, but completion.

Perhaps that is the true essence of this project: a moment of reflection without standing still. A look back that does not romanticise, but sharpens what was already there. In a present where questions of identity, body and belonging are once again being fiercely debated, these songs feel strikingly relevant once more.

And then there is the stage - where it all began, and where everything is continually reinvented. This autumn, PLACEBO return to it with a major German tour, performing songs from their first two albums, including tracks that have not been played live for over twenty years. A celebration, certainly - but above all, a promise.
