As always there were a lot of debut albums on the dark scene. Some debuts did not even make it into the contenders, because they were made by musicians, who published material in other projects in the same genre as the new one. However, there was plenty of fresh new sound with unconventional approaches and variations in 2023, which indicates that the dark scene is developing and is not stuck.
The Post-Industrial scene in 2023 appears to be very much alive and not dying, as some listeners and music critics may say and write. New projects are appearing from famous and not known musicians in different genres and different sounds. Old, famous artists are releasing high-quality new material and their projects continue to perform at major and local festivals. Everything is going as usual. The only thing that catches eye is the absence both in the top and in the contenders for the top of new projects from new musicians, who have not been seen before in other more popular bands. This was lacking in 2023, but this trend has been noticeable for a long time, so everything is stable in the Post-Industrial music scene.
The Industrial scene in 2023 like every year before pleases with stylistic diversity, powerful new releases from well-known projects and promising young formations that, in fact, have been in the experimental music scene for many years now, but have created many projects for each concept of their material. Industrial has always been, is and will be the most intense part of the dark scene. The least popular, but there is no need to popularize it. This music (or antimusic) is not for everyone.
The Synth scene of 2023 standardly provides high-quality sound, but not always solid material. It has already become a tradition, when listening to albums from both new and old projects good mixing, excellent mastering and high-quality arrangements are noticable, but the compositional abilities either repeat what was done by other musicians or even the same musician before or lead into completely different areas and sounds that are unusual for the specific project. However, this does not mean that the scene is dying. The scene is thriving and developing with many projects in music using other electronic genres, which periodically flow into unexpected final results. This year’s top included both new young projects, old-timers of the scene and the amazing productivity and efficiency of one musician.
EPs, maxi-singles, compilations and remix releases are a separate section of music and exist by their own rules and therefore are evaluated according to their own criteria. Creating a good comprehensive EP and even more so a high-quality, interesting and varied remix release is not as easy as it might seem. It’s easier with EPs, because their advantage is a short duration and therefore less time for listening and easy comprehension. There were a lot of interesting EPs and remixes in 2023. Unfortunately, the top is limited to 10 positions, otherwise there would be more on the list, because there are enough worthy and interesting non-album releases for two tops every year.
