Album Review

DEATHSTARS is a Swedish metal band that has made themselves a name with their music that they call “Deathglam”. Since the start in 2000 they have brought us two records filled with good and cool music. Their first record ‘Synthetic Generation’ came 2003 with singles as ‘Synthetic Generation’ and ‘Syndrome’. 2006 was the year when ‘Termination Bliss’ was released and this record became a major success for the band. Now they are finally here with their third record ‘Night Electric Night’ and it is a record that really delivers and shows what a great band DEATHSTARS has become.

With most records you get a feeling of what to expect while listening to the first song/songs and then you might think you know how the rest of the record will sound like, sometimes you get surprised in good or in bad ways. ‘Night Electric Night’ is a record that simply kicks the music started and takes off with the first song ‘Chertograd’, it works very good as the first song on the record. The rougher sound with stronger guitars and bass in this one and on the following songs gives the music more edge. The drums add a cool and catchy beat and the synth flows under the surface on some songs and are more obvious in some other ones. I think this record sounds darker than their other two records and it sounds like DEATHSTARS has moved on, on their own path with their own music and it works extremely well! The first single from the album, ‘Death dies hard’, is a flowing and catchy song that easily gets stuck in your head, it came with a really cool video made in Belgrade by director Ivan Colic. The title song ‘Night Electric Night’ was the next song to hit DEATHSTARS playlist on MySpace and this is a really interesting song where the musical part is.

‘The Mark of the Gun’ is genial with its catchy lyric and beat. I believe that the chorus will be chanted back to the band on the live shows. Cool that Andreas can play and be this creative with the lyrics. ‘Via the End’ is such a beautiful and strong song that at least I feel goes straight for the heart. How I look forward to enjoy this one live. ‘Venus in Arms’ starts out bright but becomes darker, both lyric and music, and is really cool. I think that death goes like a read thread through the songs on this record and I believe both Nightmare and Whiplasher has been reflecting over death while making ‘Night Electric Night’. Andreas’ voice sounds deeper and stronger on this record, he sings in his own special way and that really makes the songs more interesting. When I listen to the bonus songs on the record and hear the piano version of ‘Via the End’ I am happy I went for the golden edition of the record because it is simply magnificent!
