19th to 20th April 2014
Paaspop Festival Day 1: And So I Watch You From Afar, Band of Skulls, Blood Red Shoes, Devildriver, Halestorm, Navarone, The Paceshifters, Silverfaces, Peter Pan Speedrock, Prodigy, Triggerfinger
Paaspop or “Easter pop” in Schijndel is the usual kick off for the festival season in the Netherlands and the weather proves to be quite unpredictable this time of year. While last year I geared up with gloves and a woollen hat in my camera bag, this year sunglasses and sunscreen were in the bag! Paaspop obviously has grown even further with more bands, more & bigger stages and a bigger visitor capacity. Line-up is very diverse as it is each year, with rock, metal, pop, dance, reggae, theatre and whatnot. Loud guitars and drums were mostly to be found at the Phoenix, Jack Daniel’s stage and the Thunderbolt, but in between there was some time to wander around the festival compound and enjoy the sun!

Sonata Arctica & Trick or Treat
What better day to visit a power metal concert than a sunny Saturday? And what city to better waste your precious time to be in a queue than Bochum? Last time I saw a queue like that was at Dynamo Open Air in 1999 but that was a festival… I’ll be damned. Today, SONATA ARCTICA were presenting their new album and many people were up to check it out!

DevilDriver & Sylosis
For their last show in Germany, DEVILDRIVER had chosen the Gruenspan in Hamburg. The guys from Santa Barbara, California, released their new and sixth album, ‘Winter Kills’, already in August 2013 and were now finally playing a show for their German head bangers. Actually, DEVILDRIVER brought along two bands for support. But unfortunately, BLEED FROM WITHIN could not perform this night because of an car accident on the road. So SYLOSIS were the only opener.

Diary of Dreams & Special Guest In Strict Confidence
This Saturday evening, the Markthalle in Hamburg was in the hand of dark music fans since DIARY OF DREAMS were celebrating the final of their “Elegies in Darkness” tour in Hamburg. Since 1989, the band stands for first-class Synth Roth with gloomy character, so it is no surprise that the new album climbed up to a veritable 31st position in German album charts and the venue was nearly sold-out. The support slot was taken by IN STRICT CONFIDENCE who started their set punctually at 20:00.

Seabound & Iris
One band would have been pure luxury already, but if two of your favourite bands embark on tour together, which isn't likely to happen again so soon, you'll do the best you can to be there. This show in Oberhausen was the first SEABOUND & IRIS would play together, and as we all know, some things are bound to go wrong with the first show...
