Arvika festival 2009 Day 2: Lillasyster, De/Vision and Depeche Mode
The second day of the festival was the one I think almost everyone at the festival was waiting for: the night with DEPECHE MODE. I heard a lot of people talking about how much they looked forward to see DM playing live at the festival and well, I sure was one of them! When I first heard that the Arvika festival had managed to book DEPECHE MODE I was very surprised and of course very happy! I just wondered how on earth I would be able to go and see this thing happen but then things just worked out and I am so happy I could be there and see them live! But before it was time to see DM, I had two interviews booked (Elegant Machinery and De/Vision) and also I was planning on seeing DE/VISION live as well.
Lillasyster – Andromeda Stage
LILLASYSTER means Little sister if you translate it to English. The band came together in Gothenburg in 2006 when Martin Westerstrand and Daniel Cordero started the band. At first they called themselves RALLYPACK and sang in English but then they started to sing in Swedish and changed name to LILLASYSTER. Martina and Daniel were members of the Swedish hard rock band LOK before starting this band. www.myspace.com/bandetlillasyster / http://www.lillasyster.nu/

I had not heard of this band before but I must say that I really liked their sound and they were really cool to see live. It is impressive how the band can make it work to sing like this in Swedish. A large crowd was in front of the stage and they really enjoyed the show.

De/Vision – Apollo Stage
DE/VISION is Thomas Adam and Steffen Keth; they formed the band back in 1988 and have since the start really developed their synth-pop-electro music. DE/VISION had the doubtful pleasure to play on the Apollo stage just some hours before DEPECHE MODE would kick off on the main stage and I think a lot of people were their waiting instead of being here. http://www.devision-music.de/ / www.myspace.com/devisionmusic
Music & Performance
DE/VISION did a really good show, the singer Steffen Keth seemed happy to be on stage and he interacted a lot with the audience, encouraged them to jump and scream. He also danced to the music and showed that he had some cool moves. Some of the songs they played were ‘Strange affection’ and ‘Love will find a way’. The audience enjoyed the show a lot.

Depeche Mode – Vintergatan Stage
There is no doubt about which band everyone was waiting for this day and it felt like everyone on the festival ground was there in front of the stage. I read somewhere that it was around 25,000 people in front of the stage and I believe this number is right. http://www.depechemode.com/ / www.myspace.com/depechemode

The sun was going down, and the night was slowly coming when finally DEPECHE MODE entered the main stage at the festival. Ah, what a pleasure to see the band live and since Dave Gahan has been ill it was wonderful to see him back on stage again. In front of the stage it was really crowded and we had to move to the right side to avoid being totally crushed in the crowd. I was really too far away from the stage than I like to be on a DEPECHE MODE concert but the thick crowd made me stay some back. DM started the set with a couple of songs from their new album and since they are playing at a festival I thought they would play more older songs than new but well the first song ‘In Chains’ was really good live.
When ‘It’s no good’ came, the audience really went wild - it is such a great song live and Dave danced and moved with his usual sexy confidence on stage. I really like ‘A question of time’ so it was a treat to enjoy that one live! ‘Fly on the windscreen’ was so cool to hear and see being performed! A cool surprise for me was to hear ‘I feel you’ which I think was great live as well! I am really happy with the fact that they ended the set with ‘Personal Jesus’ because last time they played in Stockholm they ended the set with ‘Goodnight lovers’ and it felt so depressing, I prefer to end a set with energy! Great show even though the set was shorter than during the usual non-festival shows.
