Single Review

Since 2nd October 2009, ASP from Frankfurt has been touring German clubs. It can be assumed that the formation has already introduced its recent single `Wer sonst?´ on stage. This double-feature single is richly endowed with the two new tracks `Wer sonst?´ and `Im Märchenland´, a live video of the ASP-appearance at the Blackfield festival, the cover songs `Rain´ (THE CULT) and `Kummer´ (TRIO) and four remixes that were done by big names of the scene. Moreover, a twelve-page-booklet rounds off the new release.

The powerful up-tempo title track is my favourite piece from the record. Classical e-guitar sounds are in line with German lyrics issuing human activities leading to self-destruction of mankind. `Wer sonst?´ is sung by ASP and IN EXTREMO front man Micha Rhein who is also known under the name “Das Letzte Einhorn”. The combination of these two vocal power packs turn `Wer sonst?´ into a catchy rock anthem that could develop to a concert’s highlight, as I can almost hear the crowd shouting out the line “wer sonst”. `Im Märchenland´ begins with pulsating synth sounds leading over to dragging guitars and vocalist Alexander Spreng’s dark and passionate vocals. The rather melodic chorus breaks with the rough verses´ style.

`Rain´ comes as a fully-fledged Hard Rock piece fitted out with the distinctive singing ASP-fans will detect instantly. The deeply sad cover version of the TRIO-song `Kummer´ lives on its drumming that is dominating the whole soundscape. Weird caterwauling and way too dramatic vocals invite to sway along and make `Kummer´ appearing unintentionally funny. The remixes will certainly please all collectors and fans of ASP who should also feel comfortable with this single’s tracks.
